Integrated Studies Unit on Australian Animals. Level 3, Year 4.

Outcome ‚ Identify the main structural features that work together to form systems in plants and animals.

Lesson 1
  • Talk about different types of Australian animals.
  • Brainstorm on board the different ones they can think of. Categorise these words further into feather, marsupials, fin, feral, reptiles.
  • Talk about feral as introduced species. Discuss the other headings.
  • Give the "Australian Animals" cover page (iv). Color the animals as you learn about it. Draw 3 feral animals of your own and 3 reptiles. E.g. fox, rabbit, camel, deer, European wasp, snake, crocodile.
  • Lesson 2
  • Read a book about animals.
  • Introduce research avenues.
  • Complete the before part of the before and after chart to see what they already know about Australian animals. Glue this into Integrated Studies book.
  • Lesson 3 Marsupials
  • Get a book on marsupials and read it to the chn.
  • Write new word vocabulary (glossary sheet) on blackboard and talk about what these words are and what they mean.
  • Complete page 8 and question 3, 4, and 5 of page 9, learning facts about marsupial in a comprehension type of activity.
  • Lesson 4 Marsupials
  • Read them a storybook about the Kangaroo.
  • Complete information about the Kangaroo.
  • Complete a sequencing activity about the Kangaroo¼s life cycle.
  • Lesson 5 Marsupials
  • Learning about Koala¼s and general facts and recording concise information about them. Page 14 & questions 1 and 3 of pg15.
  • Lesson 6 Reptiles
  • Introduce research methods you would use when researching and animal via books. For example, table of contents, index, pages, headings, sub-headings, pictures, diagrams.
  • Show the chn how you would then organise this information into the matrix (sheet pg 51) or summary boxes ‚ key phrases etc. Get some chn to read information to you and the class and you put into the matrix on the board.

    Reptiles
  • Art lesson using oil pastels. They are to choose their own Reptile to create a picture with oil pastel and camouflage the reptile in the surroundings in which it lives. Reptiles

  • Lesson 9 Feral
  • Introduce feral animals again. List them on the board.
  • Revise the research technique on the board using the same heading on the research sheet (pg 5), A3 size paper.
  • They are then to research their own feral animals from the list of them on the board. Some information sheets are also in the Australian Animals Teacher Resource book and in information sheets.

  • Continue research.
  • Lesson 11 Feral
  • Present your research to the class.
  • Lesson 12 Fin
  • Watch a video on endangered species.
  • Make sure that the chn take concise notes to refer to for later lessons.
  • Read to them some stories of endangered animals due to the fur trade, fashion, lab animals, horses for dog meat, etc.
  • Lesson 13 Fin
  • Have a discussion about endangered animals and what opinions the chn have about this.
  • Pair the chn off with their next door neighbours and prepare arguments for a debate on the topic "People must not be allowed to use animals in any way whatsoever."
  • Use the BLM 77 as a guideline for them to record their points on. Half the class must be for and half against.
  • The 2 pair with the best argument go into the Great Debate with another class.
  • Lesson 14 ‚ Over a 2hr period. Fin
  • The debate takes place with four students on each side debating the issue.
  • Each child receives a judging sheet to judge the debaters on presentation, voice level, arguments, etc.
  • At the end of the debate the spectators have their chance to enter any arguments that have not yet been argued.
  • Lesson 15 Feather
  • Introduce the Emu and the Kookaburra. Show the feathers and eggs from the Emu and talk about how these animals are farmed and how we then get, Emu oil and things like that. Talk about why the Kookaburra laughs, and perhaps read a storybook and sing the Kookaburra song.
  • Lesson 16 Feather
  • Copy the Kookaburra and Emu sheets from pages 22, 23, 12, & 13 and give the chn a choice of which information sheets they which to choose from.
  • The pick a few people to read out what they found to the rest of the class.
  • Lesson 17 Feather
  • Produce a poster about a Australian bird of their choice onto A4 paper. Needs to be informative and have a picture of the bird and its life cycle.
  • Information will be provided for the chn to access.
  • Lesson 18
  • Adaptations of the Australian animals to the changing world. Complete pages 6 & 7.
  • Have a discussion about what has been discovered from their reading.
  • Lesson 19 Food Chain/Energy Cycle
  • Talk about how the food cycle is formed and how if something is deleted what would happen to the animals.
  • Lesson 20 Food Chain/Energy Cycle
  • Get the children to develop their own food chain with any Australian animal that they choose.
  • Lesson 21 Food Chain/Energy Cycle
  • Present their food chain to the class.
  • Reinforce the food chains and their importance.

    Complete an Australian animal booklet put together at their own pace. This is revision type work to see what they know and which activity they choose to complete first.
